914 x 441 mm
This striking piece is the first in a three-part collaborative series by artists Andiswa Bhungane and Sabrina Scherf.
Painted on a thick wooden board using acrylics, the artwork is rich in texture and depth, encapsulated under a glossy resin finish. The most prominent feature is a 3D face figure, meticulously hand carved and brought to life through layers of cutting - protruding boldly from the center of the board. This mask-like visage is intricately detailed with black paint flowing seamlessly into white.
Surrounding the central figure, vibrant geometric patterns in hues of red, yellow, green, and black pay homage to traditional African motifs, lending the piece a sense of cultural identity and heritage.
The combination of modern materials with historical designs invites viewers to reflect on the continuity and evolution of cultural expression and modern art.
